A Good Domain Name Registration for Branding
from: Lynn KenilworthWhen you decide to have a website you need to understand what is involved with domain name registration. The name of your website is important but the approach is two fold.
1. Business related domain name registration.
Many people choose their domain name based upon the name of their business. For example, if your business name is JTR, Inc., you might consider a domain name of JTRinc.com. This way your customers can remember your domain name easily and find your website.
The more you advertise or use your domain name, the more memorable it becomes. Use your business name in the correspondence with your customers to brand your business name into their memory and become repeat customers.
Another reason to use your business name for domain registration is because it is more likely to be an available domain name, if it is unique.
2. Keyword related domain name registration
What are you selling? Or what subject does your website relate to? If your website will be selling 'electric widgets', then 'electric widgets' would be your keyword. A keyword is what the customer would type into a search box to find your product. Keywords can be a single word, or more than one word.
For example, if your website has information about 'blue widgets', your keywords could be: blue widgets, blue widgets for the home, blue widgets for business, etc.
Why would you include your keyword in your domain name registration?
You want your potential customers to find your website, right? The search engines examine your site to find the most revelant information when a person searches. If they enter your keywords into the search box, you want your website to be listed in the search results. That way, they can click their way to your website.
The search engines, like Google, use domain name registration information as part of their ranking information, or for which website has the most revelant information the customer is looking for. If a person is searching for 'blue widgets' and your domain name is 'blue-widgets.com', Google would see your site as more revelant than one called just 'widgets.com'.
Domain name registration is branding your business, be it by your business name or product. You can decide which way is the most important to your business strategy.
